ABOUT THIS NECKLACE

Victorians were fascinated by all manner of critters—even bugs! And, in typical Victorian style, jewelers elevated this humble beetle, bestowing it with both beauty and practicality. The envy of all his beetle friends, his wings are designed with guilloche engraving overlaid by bright emerald-green translucent enamel accented with lively rose-cut diamonds. His diamond-dotted head is accented with black enamel, and his entire body is finely, and realistically engraved (his underside is a work of art unto itself). Not content to just look fabulous, his wings spread open to reveal a small watch. With ruby eyes glimmering, he is quite content to give you the time of day as he suspends from a shimmering 20-inch chain. Total diamond weight, .50 carat. Hand fabricated in 18K yellow gold, circa 1880. Condition note: One wing has chipped enamel, other enamel shows light wear. Two small rose cut diamonds are chipped. The movement is working.

Note: We like to think of our vintage and antique timepieces as examples of fine jewelry art, all of which are serviced prior to sale. Unless otherwise noted, the movement of each piece will be in working order when the watch leaves our store. However, due to the delicate nature of these timepieces, there is no further warranty on the movement or any other mechanical parts. Please refer to our Education/Knowledge section for additional information.

About Victorian Jewelry

The eclectic Victorians didn’t limit themselves when it came to motifs and themes—if it struck their fancy, they turned it into jewelry. Sweet and sentimental with a distinct romantic streak, Victorian gems expanded upon their Georgian predecessors. The array of styles that blossomed (sometimes quite literally) during this era endure to this day.

Jewelry Care

As with anything of value, especially sentimental value, taking good care of your vintage and antique jewelry from Lang will enhance its beauty and extend its lifespan. We encourage you to have your jewelry checked and cleaned by us or by your trusted local jeweler every six months, to ensure that each piece is in good wearable condition with all gemstones in place. It’s not uncommon for stones to loosen over time, and it’s much easier to tighten a loose stone than to replace a lost one! As stated in our Repair Policy, we strongly recommend that you allow us to perform any repairs, since our jewelers are specialists in restoring vintage and antique jewelry.
