ABOUT THIS JEWELRY

>In 1816, Scottish scientist Sir David Brewster invented the kaleidoscope. Later, in the early 1870s, Charles Bush, a Prussian native living in Massachusetts, improved upon the fascinating optical instrument and was the first to manufacture the "parlor" kaleidoscope en mass. Victorian jewelers took note. This riotously colorful pendant/brooch has a captivating kaleidoscopic effect. Centered by a 3.00 carat star sapphire (encircled by tiny black enamel-tipped stamens), it is surrounded in perfect symmetry by rich pink sapphires (or pinkish-red rubies), totaling 3.50 carats, small cornflower blue sapphires, citrines, garnet doublets,* natural pearls, and opals. A delightful treat for the eyes, it is hand fabricated in 14K yellow gold, suspends from an 18-inch chain, and can be worn as a brooch. Total gemstone weight, 8.30 carats. *The garnets are doublets, meaning that each stone has a top garnet layer backed by (in this case) emerald green glass, creating the overall effect of emeralds. This technique was commonly used in the Victorian era to achieve a desired color or to support more fragile stones.

About Victorian Jewelry

The eclectic Victorians didn’t limit themselves when it came to motifs and themes—if it struck their fancy, they turned it into jewelry. Sweet and sentimental with a distinct romantic streak, Victorian gems expanded upon their Georgian predecessors. The array of styles that blossomed (sometimes quite literally) during this era endure to this day.

Jewelry Care

As with anything of value, especially sentimental value, taking good care of your vintage and antique jewelry from Lang will enhance its beauty and extend its lifespan. We encourage you to have your jewelry checked and cleaned by us or by your trusted local jeweler every six months, to ensure that each piece is in good wearable condition with all gemstones in place. It’s not uncommon for stones to loosen over time, and it’s much easier to tighten a loose stone than to replace a lost one! As stated in our Repair Policy, we strongly recommend that you allow us to perform any repairs, since our jewelers are specialists in restoring vintage and antique jewelry.
