ABOUT THIS BRACELET
Of all of the naturally occurring elements used to create jewelry, hair is not one that first comes to mind. However, beginning around the 17th century, hair was used in memento mori pieces, designed as a wearable remembrance of those who had gone before. Hair was also used in jewelry with a more joyful significance, incorporating, for instance, a lock of a child or lover's hair, or even that of a precious pet. This braided bracelet of brunette tresses was fashioned using a weaving technique that produced springy, lace-like coils that, upon its meticulously painstaking completion, were joined together by way of a striking 18K gold scallop-edged clasp lavishly hand engraved with a graceful scroll motif and inscribed with, "To Lizzie." Hand fabricated, it measures 7 1/2 inches. Back of clasp is 9K rosy-yellow, tongue is base metal. A rare and wonderful wearable collectible, circa the mid-19th century.
