Cameo

A cameo is carved gemstone - most commonly banded agate - or shell glyptograph in which the foreground is carved away, leaving a colored background. This is the opposite of an intaglio. Cameos have been created since Biblical times and were very popular during the end of the 18th and the entire 19th century.
