During the eighteenth century, Spain controlled the gold and emerald mines of Colombia and Peru. This wealth of resources resulted in a exquisitely fine gem-set gold jewelry. Parures of emeralds, necklaces, stomachers, rings, earrings etc. were plentiful at the court of Spain. A long gold earring style called Catalan was distinguished by a multitude of emeralds or hessonite garnet.
